I didn't get much out of this lecture except he was an 8bit VJ. It's better than being a 2bit VJ. I jest. Since I didn't get a lot of what was going on because of the ambient noise of the room, I went to check out their myspace and to do a little browsing. I am a sucker for 8bit synth sounds and anything that sounds like an old nintendo system. There is a band that I like that has an 8bit synth and they're called Horse The Band. A little different that Meneo, but it's that 8 bit sound that hooks me.

Their seems to be a fascination with 8bit sounds among some of the artists Raph spoke to. What is the purpose of using of 8bit nintendo beats? I don't ask this question in a negative way, I personally find nostalgia and entertainment by it. But is their a philosophy behind using old technology like a Commodore 64 or Game Boy?

In reviewing Meneo's music (www.myspace.com/meneo) I can hear their direct cultural influences even through the 8 bit synths. When moving from track to track my previous assumption was that they would sound similar; but surprisingly each track had their own distinct flavor. I only wish I could have seen their live performance.

After the interview I too chose to go to their site and see what they were about, and what not, I found that the music on it was very interesting I've heard some 8 bit music before, however this wasn’t half bad, Steve I totally agree with what you are saying when you say that you can here the influence of their culture, and I think that, that influence really helps in making the music interesting.

I have found that though the shorter interview have less to offer when responding to them, there just is not enough time for a lot of discussion to usually happen, and it seems rushed,. Though the short ones are nice because of them not taking long to watch, there is a definite disadvantage in that there is more often than not, not enough content in the interviews to make a lot of concise comments.

However, in this interview I also was interested to hear more about the collaboration process and how it works. I wish that Meneo had elaborated a bit more about the subject, and talked about what it is like.

I'll have to agree with Brian in that the short interviews, although convenient for most college students schedules, do not supply much information. However, i think the most that could have come from this interview did considering the circumstances. I'm assuming late at night, most of the artists were out enjoying a break from the hectic festival and they're most likely not in the best mindset to do an informative interview. Although it's nice to see such a variant background coming from all the artists Raph has been interviewing.

[04.30.2008] microbcn meeting 04/27/2008 video by entter and ascii bit made with a
Fisher-Price PXL2000 videocamera - music by goto80.

I found that news piece rather interesting. i love when people misuse the intentions of a certain product, medium, etc. Although this IS a videocamera, the point is for children to mess around with a child's toy(but agreed that children's toys are getting a lot more advanced). People need to realize that within art -- there are no boundaries. USE A CHILD'S CAMERA -- Go for it - use a self-made pinhole camera -- see what happens. I've worked on a scanner camera before, it wasn't fully successful, but there were some interesting results for sure.

A lot of times people will say "i play around with mediums" and they really don't. I think something is truly play when someone says "wow, i've never thought of doing this / using this / etc." because then it is truly new.

Although 8 bit music is not great to jam out to, it remains interesting. For kids today it may seem like a crazy weird sound, but for me presents a lot of nostalgia (video games and such). Even a lot of old music with synths took advantage of some 8 bit tracks. In my blog about Ilan -- i suggested that mediums can be recreated and I think this project with Raul supports my theory because I have seen a lot of "nostalgia art" between video games and toys from the 80s. I think this is neat because you can go back and explore a medium that did not have the full potential in it's own time (i.e. 80s)
